Pender man charged with attempted murder

BURGAW - A Burgaw man is in jail after allegedly attempting to murder his wife by strangulation.

According to the Pender County Sheriff’s Office Tommy Wayne Smith, 51, of Croomsbridge Road in Burgaw was arrested Dec. 15 for attempting to strangle his wife, Charlotte Marie Smith, to death at their home last week.

Smith has been charged with

*         Attempt First Degree Murder.

*         Assault by Strangulation.

*         First Degree Sexual Offense.

*         Assault on a Female.

*         Communicating Threats.

“The charges against Tommy Wayne Smith are a result of a domestic assault which occurred on Monday, December 9th, 2013 when Mr. Smith physically assaulted his wife, Charlotte Marie Smith,” stated the Pender Sheriff’s Office press release.

Smith is presently in the Scotland County Jail on a $30,000 bond as a result of a pending probation violation charge in that county.  Upon disposition of that case Mr. Smith will be transported to Pender County to face the above mentioned pending charges.
