Roberts entered the one room school at approximately 10:30 a.m. fully armed with weapons, tools and supplies for a long standoff with police.
After entering the school he forced all 15 boys, several women and infants outside while keeping 11 girls behind. When the police arrived they found the school had been barricaded and the hostages bound. Roberts was allowed a brief cell phone conversation with his wife to whom he said he was angry at god for the death of his young daughter nine years earlier. He also admitted to molesting two girls 20 years earlier and felt the desire to do it again.
At 11 a.m. Roberts called 911 and told the dispatcher if the police did not leave he would begin shooting. When they did not leave he shot five students. The police stormed the school and Roberts shot himself in the head.
Ten days after the shooting the Amish community tore down the schoo building and built a new one.
